Best Time to Trade Forex from Lagos: WAT Sessions

Risk warning: Busy hours mean bigger moves and bigger risk. This is education, not financial advice.

Not all hours are good. Trade when London and New York are busy — 8am–5pm and 1pm–10pm WAT. Best is 1pm–5pm WAT overlap.

You trade busy hours for clear moves. You avoid quiet hours for less noise.

Sessions in WAT (UTC+1)

Nigeria uses WAT (UTC+1) year-round. Forex runs 24 hours from Monday to Friday. Four sessions move the market.

  • Sydney ~9pm–6am WAT — quiet. Small moves, wide choppy candles. Not for beginners.
  • Tokyo ~12am–9am WAT — moves JPY pairs (USD/JPY), quiet for EUR/USD.
  • London ~8am–5pm WAT — busy for EUR/USD, GBP/USD. London is the biggest session. Clear trends.
  • New York ~1pm–10pm WAT — busy. US news hits here. Big moves on all majors.
  • Overlap London/New York 1pm–5pm WATbusiest. Two giants trade together. Best moves and most volume.

Think of it like markets in Lagos. Sydney is early morning — few buyers. London is Balogun at noon — full. New York overlap is two markets open at once.

Best window for small accounts

Your window depends on your day and your account size.

If you are free in the day

Trade London 8am–5pm WAT. Core best is 1pm–5pm WAT overlap. This gives you:

  • Clear trends on EUR/USD and GBP/USD.
  • Enough moves to hit your 40-pip target (1:2) without waiting all day.
  • More news, but also more chance — use a stop loss always.

Start with EUR/USD in this window. It has low spread (small cost built into price) and moves clean. See Pips and Lots.

If you work 9–5

Focus on 6pm–10pm WAT — New York evening. Still active for EUR/USD. Moves are smaller than 1pm–5pm but still tradable.

Avoid early morning Sydney (9pm–6am WAT) as a beginner. You will see small ranges and pay spread for little gain.

If you fund ₦15,000 / ~$10

You risk ₦150 per trade (1%). You need moves big enough to reach 1:2 (risk ₦150 to try to make ₦300). Quiet hours rarely give 40 pips clean. Busy hours do. See Risk-Reward and How to Start with ₦15,000.

So you pick 1pm–5pm WAT as your main window, and 6pm–10pm WAT as your backup.

News in WAT

News moves prices fast. Check it before you trade.

  • US data at 1:30pm WAT (often) — NFP, CPI, interest. Spikes can hit your stop in seconds.
  • London news at 9am–11am WAT — UK CPI, ECB talk.

As a beginner, do not trade 5 minutes before and 15 minutes after big news. Wait for price to settle. See What Makes the Market Move.

Use a free calendar. Set it to WAT (UTC+1) or GMT+1. Check it each morning.

Your weekly rhythm

You do not need to trade every day. You need a rhythm.

Lagos vs Abuja

No. Both use WAT. Your session times are the same in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Data costs may differ, but hours do not.

What matters is your schedule. If PHCN cuts power at 8pm in your area, trade 1pm–5pm instead. Plan around your light and data.

FAQ

Can I trade at night (9pm–6am WAT)?

You can, but you should not as a beginner. Sydney is quiet for EUR/USD. Moves are small and choppy. You risk paying spread for noise. Stick to London 8am–5pm WAT until you have 20 live trades with a plan.

What if I miss 1pm–5pm overlap?

Use 6pm–10pm WAT. New York is still open. Moves are enough for a 20-pip stop and 40-pip target. Do not force trades at 2am — sleep matters more than one trade.

Should I trade every overlap?

No. You trade only when your setup appears. If you see trend up + pullback to support (floor where price bounces) and candle close, you trade. If not, you wait. See Support and Resistance and Entry and Exit Rules.

Do I need to stay glued to the chart?

No. Set your stop loss (brake pedal) and take profit, then walk away. See Stop Loss. Check after one hour or at close. Staring breeds FOMO. See FOMO.

Common mistakes

  • Trading Sydney quiet hours — you see small moves and guess. Wait for busy London.
  • Trading before news — spike hits your stop. Check calendar first.
  • Switching pairs each hour — you lose focus. Stick to EUR/USD for 20 trades.
  • No plan for time — you trade whenever you have data. Pick one window and guard it.
  • Overtrading the overlap — busy does not mean you trade 10 times. One good trade beats five random.

Next steps

  1. Pick your window — 1pm–5pm WAT if free, 6pm–10pm WAT if you work days.
  2. Practise that window on demo for two weeks. See How to Use a Demo Account.
  3. Write it into your plan. See The Trading Plan.
  4. Place your first trade in that window — Your First Trade Walkthrough.
  5. Start tiny with ₦15,000 / ~$10 — How to Start with ₦15,000.

Pillar guide: Starting Forex as a Beginner (2026).

Rate used: ~₦1,500 / $1. Small amounts like ₦150 use same rate.

Bottom line: Trade busy London 8am–5pm and overlap 1pm–5pm WAT, avoid quiet hours, set stop and walk away, or you risk choppy losses.
