How to Use a Demo Account Before Risking Real Naira

Risk warning: Demo removes emotions. Live is harder. This is education, not financial advice.

A demo uses fake money but real prices. Use it to learn the buttons and your plan before you risk naira.

You practise two weeks, 20 trades, with stop loss every time. Then you know if you are ready for live.

Why demo matters

Demo trains your hands without cost. Live trains your emotions. You need hand skill first.

On demo, you learn to set lot size, stop loss (brake pedal), and take profit without fear. You test your 1% rule — risk ₦150 on a ₦15,000 / ~$10 model even though balance is fake. See The 1% Rule.

Demo also shows if your idea works before you pay for it. See Backtesting.

Set up in 2 minutes

You need no NIN or BVN for demo.

  1. Open demo — pick broker app. Open your broker app. Tap Open Demo Account. Choose MT4 or MT5. MT5 is newer — pick it if unsure.
  2. Set fake balance — $10,000 fake is fine. This number does not matter. You will still risk 1% per fake trade. Treat ₦150 risk as if it were real.
  3. Log in — find EUR/USD. You get login and server. Log into MT4/MT5 and open EUR/USD chart. This pair moves well in London hours.

You are ready to place a fake trade.

How to practise (2 weeks)

You practise like live. Same plan, same risk, same hours.

Trade busy hours

  • Trade London 8am–5pm WAT — busy and clear. See Best Time to Trade from Lagos and School Trading Sessions and WAT.
  • If you work days, use 1pm–5pm WAT overlap — busiest hour. Or 6pm–10pm WAT from New York.
  • Avoid quiet Sydney 9pm–6am WAT — you will see noise, not skill.

Use your plan every time

Your plan needs five lines:

  • Pair: EUR/USD.
  • Setup: Trend up + pullback to support (floor where price bounces). See Support and Resistance.
  • Entry: Candle close above support.
  • Stop: 20 pips below (brake pedal). See Stop Loss.
  • Target: 40 pips above (1:2). See Risk-Reward.

You place stop and target before you click Buy or Sell. You risk 1% each time. You adjust lot so 20 pips ≈ ₦150. See Position Sizing.

Write every trade

You keep a journal. One line per trade:

  • Date, pair, entry, stop, target, result, and feeling.

Example: "13 Aug, EUR/USD buy at 1.0800, stop 1.0780, target 1.0840, win, felt calm."

See The Trading Journal. After 10 trades, you review: did you follow plan or did FOMO push you? See FOMO.

When to go live

You are ready when you hit four marks. Be honest.

  1. 20 demo trades done — with stop every time. No skip. If you skipped stops on demo, you will skip live and lose.
  2. You followed plan — not feelings. You waited for candle close at support. You did not chase.
  3. You kept 1% risk — each trade. Losses were small. Wins were about twice the risk. You saw Why Most Beginners Lose in action.
  4. You stayed calm — after wins and losses. You stopped after 2 losses. No revenge trading. See Revenge Trading and Emotions.

When these four are true, you go to Cent live with ₦15,000 / ~$10. See From Demo to Live and How to Start with ₦15,000.

If not true, you stay on demo one more week. You do not rush.

Demo traps to avoid

  • Big fake lots. Demo makes you feel rich. You use big lots and win big fake. Live with ₦15,000 / ~$10 does not allow it. Keep lots tiny, as if balance were ₦15,000 / ~$10.
  • No stop loss. Demo loss feels free, so you skip stop. This trains a bad habit. Always set stop.
  • Overtrading. Demo has no cost, so you click 20 times a day. Live will punish this with spread and fees. Stick to one good setup per day.
  • Ignoring journal. You think you remember. You do not. Write it. Your journal is your coach.
  • Jumping to signals. Demo tempts you to copy Telegram signals. You learn nothing. Build your own plan. See Signal Seller Scams.

Live will feel different

Live adds fear. Your heart beats faster. You may want to move your stop further to avoid loss. Do not.

Your rules on live stay the same as demo:

  • Risk ₦150 per trade (1% on ₦15,000 / ~$10).
  • Stop always on.
  • Stop trading after 2 losses. See Discipline.

If fear is too strong, return to demo for one week. This is normal.
