Download and Set Up MT5 on Your Phone or PC

Risk warning: Trading can lose money fast. This is education, not financial advice.

MT5 (MetaTrader 5) is the free app where you view charts and place orders. Get it from a safe source, log in with demo, and clean your chart before you trade.

You need 10 minutes, a phone or PC, and no deposit for this setup.

Set up MT5 in four moves on phone or PC. Get the app from a safe store, log in with the demo server details, keep one clean EUR/USD chart, and compare spread in busy versus quiet hours.

Get app from safe place

Fake trading apps steal logins. Get MT5 only from trusted places.

  1. Phone Android — use Play Store. Search "MetaTrader 5". Check the maker name is MetaQuotes. Tap install.
  2. Phone iPhone — use App Store. Search "MetaTrader 5". Check the same maker name. Tap get.
  3. PC — use broker site. Open your broker site by typing it yourself. Find their MT5 download page. Run the file it gives you.
  4. Skip strange links — no WhatsApp files. Never install an app file sent by a stranger. Never click "bonus MT5" links in groups.

After install, open the app once. You should see a blank chart screen. See How to Open a Forex Trading Account.

Log in with demo first

You learn the buttons with fake money first. Live can wait.

  1. Get demo login — from broker app. Open your broker app. Tap Open Demo Account. Choose MT5. Save the server name, login, and password it shows.
  2. Add account — inside MT5. In MT5, tap Settings, then New Account. Type your broker name. Pick the server name that matches your login.
  3. Type login — with care. Enter the login number and password. Tap Sign In. You should see a demo balance at the top.
  4. Save details — offline too. Write server, login, and password in a notebook. You will need them again after each update.

A demo uses fake money but real prices. Treat a $10 Cent plan as real while you learn. See How to Use a Demo Account and Account Types.

Clean chart in minutes

A messy chart hides price moves. A clean chart shows them.

  1. Open pair — EUR/USD only. Tap the + sign, search EUR/USD, and open its chart. One pair is enough for week one.
  2. Set timeframe — M15 or H1. M15 shows each candle as 15 minutes. H1 shows each candle as one hour. Both suit a beginner plan.
  3. Remove extras — clear indicators. Long-press the chart, open Indicators, and delete all. No colour lines should remain except candles.
  4. Add grid — keep candles clear. Switch to candlesticks if you see only lines. Zoom with two fingers until each candle is easy to count.

Busy hours give the clearest moves. Trade around 1pm–5pm WAT when London meets New York. See Best Time to Trade and Trading Sessions: When Beginners Should Trade.

Check spread before trading

The spread is the small fee you pay on each order. It is the gap between buy price and sell price.

  1. Show spread — turn column on. On phone, open Settings in MT5 and switch on Show Spread or Trade Levels. On PC, right-click Market Watch and tick Spread.
  2. Read number — compare pairs. EUR/USD often shows a tight spread in busy hours. Exotic pairs show wider numbers. Beginners should stick to tight spreads.
  3. Watch clock — time changes cost. Check spread at 1pm WAT, then at 11pm WAT. Night spread is often wider. Never judge cost from one quiet minute.
  4. Link size — keep risk tiny. A wide spread eats a small stop fast. Keep your stop loss (brake pedal) and 1% rule in mind. See Stop Loss and Position Sizing.

You will study full costs next. See the upcoming guide on spread and swap fees.

MT5 Quotes shows bid, ask, and spread for each symbol. EUR/USD costs less in busy hours, while gold and exotic pairs cost more.

Mistakes that cost beginners

  • Fake app download. A lookalike app asks for your broker password. Real MT5 never asks for card PIN or ID numbers.
  • Live login too early. You fund before you know the buttons. You tap Sell by error and panic. Stay on demo first.
  • Ten pairs at once. You open gold, GBP/JPY, and five more charts. You learn none. Keep one pair for two weeks.
  • Indicators before price. You add three tools and cannot see candles. Price comes first. Tools come later.
  • Skipping spread check. You enter at night with wide spread. Your stop starts deep in loss. Check cost first.

Practice task for today

Use demo only. No funding for this task.

  1. Install MT5 — from store. Confirm the maker name before you tap install.
  2. Log in demo — save server. Write down server, login, and password.
  3. Open EUR/USD — clean it. M15 chart, no indicators, candles clear.
  4. Find spread — screenshot twice. Capture spread at busy hour and quiet hour. Note the gap in your journal.
  5. Place one fake order — with stop. Open a tiny demo trade with stop and target. Close MT5 and review tomorrow.

If any step fails, repeat it. Do not move to live yet. See How to Start with $10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I download MetaTrader 5 safely?

Use Google Play, Apple App Store, or the official site of your broker. Avoid random links from Telegram or WhatsApp groups. Fake apps can steal your login.

Do I need a live account to use MT5?

No. Start with a demo login from your broker app. You get a server name, login number, and password. Practise on demo before you touch live.

Which chart should a beginner open first?

Open EUR/USD on M15 or H1 and remove extra indicators. One clean chart helps you see price moves. You add nothing else until you learn the buttons.

Why does my spread look wide at night?

Spread grows when few traders are active, like late night WAT hours (UTC+1). It shrinks in busy London hours. Check spread before you place any order.
