How to Read the Economic Calendar

Risk warning: News spikes can wipe a day of gains in minutes. This is education, not a signal to trade.

The economic calendar tells you when the market will move. Most beginners ignore it — then wonder why their stop hits the exact minute a red US event lands. This is the 3-minute morning routine that keeps you out of the spike.

Time check: 13:30 WAT = 08:30 ET = 12:30 GMT. 19:00 WAT = 14:00 ET = 18:00 GMT. Set your calendar to your own zone.

Read the calendar in WAT time. Red high-impact US releases at 13:30 and 19:00 need a 15-minute skip window on both sides.

What to Watch

The calendar lists events by impact: red = high, orange = medium, yellow = low. Beginners only care about red US releases.

  • US Nonfarm Payrolls — first Friday monthly, ~13:30 WAT. The biggest single mover for USD pairs.
  • US CPI / Inflation — mid-month, ~13:30 WAT. Rate expectations shift; EUR/USD can move 50 pips in minutes.
  • Fed Rate Decision — 8 times / year, ~19:00 WAT. Dollar jumps or drops on the statement.
  • ECB / BoE days — if you trade EUR/USD or GBP/USD, add those to your watch list.

Time Zone: WAT (+1)

US releases are set in New York time. WAT is GMT + 1 (UTC+1). That puts the big US releases in your morning or early afternoon.

  • 13:30 WAT — US jobs, CPI, retail sales.
  • 19:00 WAT — Fed statements, later US data.
  • Daylight saving can shift by 1 hour — confirm on ForexFactory or Investing.com the day you plan.

Do not guess. Check the clock before you open a trade.

Read Before Trading

Open the calendar each morning — before you place any order.

  1. Scan for red US events in the next 6 hours.
  2. Note the WAT time — 13:30 or 19:00.
  3. Set a skip window — 15 min before to 15 min after.
  4. Trade outside the window — enter earlier or wait for calm.

If a red event lands during your planned entry, skip that setup. See When Not to Trade Price Action.

Skip News Window

Inside the window, spread widens and price can gap. Your stop sits closer to price; a normal wiggle can knock you out.

Demo example — not a signal. You plan EUR/USD entry at 13:15 WAT for a 20-pip stop at 13:20. At 13:30 NFP hits; spread doubles; price moves 30 pips in two minutes; your stop hits. You lost on news, not on your plan.

The safe rule: no new trade inside ±15 min of red US news. Hold existing trades with stops; do not open new ones.

A stop caps your loss on a normal candle. In a news spike the fill can land far from your level, so the stop protects you less than you expect. See Stop Loss: Your Automatic Brake Pedal and The 1% Rule.

Checker Routine

Run this before every order:

  1. Open the calendar. Check Economic Calendar or ForexFactory.
  2. Mark red US events within the next 6 hours.
  3. Confirm WAT time — daylight saving can shift by one hour.
  4. Compare to your entry time — skip if inside the window.

If you plan to hold through news, move your stop farther from entry before the window — or close and reset after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the economic calendar for forex?

A schedule of major announcements — jobs, inflation, rate decisions — that move currency prices. Red (high-impact) US news at 13:30 WAT (UTC+1) is the main danger zone for beginners.

Why does time zone matter?

US releases are published in New York time. WAT is GMT + 1 (UTC+1). Most big US events land around 13:30 WAT, which is during morning business hours. You must check the clock before you trade.

How long should I skip around news?

Skip new entries 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the release. Spread widens, stops hit faster, and price can gap. Existing positions with stops are fine; do not open new ones.

Can I still trade if news is close?

Yes — if your entry is already open with a stop and target, hold it. Just do not open new trades inside the window. The edge is not worth the spike.
