Pip Value in Dollars: What One Pip Is Worth
Risk warning: Pips hide real money until you count them. This is education, not financial advice.
One pip is the smallest price step on most pairs. Its dollar worth depends on your lot size. On EUR/USD, 0.01 lot makes one pip about $0.10.
Pip is one step
EUR/USD moves from 1.0852 to 1.0853. That one-step move is one pip. From 1.0852 to 1.0872 is twenty pips.
Yen pairs count the second decimal instead. Gold moves in much larger steps. Same idea, different spot. See Pips and Lots.
Size sets the dollars
Pips do not pay. Lot size turns pips into dollars. A 20-pip win means little until you multiply by size.
| Lot size | $ per pip | 20 pips ≈ |
|---|---|---|
| 0.01 (small) | About $0.10 | About $2 |
| 0.10 (medium) | About $1 | About $20 |
| 0.50 (large) | About $5 | About $100 |
Demo example — not a signal. EUR/USD at ~$1. Yen pairs and gold count differently.
Read the table from left to right. Pick your lot, read one pip, multiply by your pips. That product is your real risk.
Count it on phone
Run this check before every order. Your phone calculator is enough.
- Find pip worth — read your lot row in the table above.
- Times pips — multiply by your stop distance in pips.
- Compare risk — the answer must stay near 1% of your account.
Example: 20-pip stop on 0.01 lot gives about $2. On a $10 account that is 20% — far past the 1% line. Shrink the stop or skip the setup. See The 1% Rule.
Same pips, different pain
Twenty pips on 0.01 lot cost about $2. The same twenty pips on 0.10 lot cost about $20. That wipes a $10 account twice over.
Big size also drags margin level toward a forced close. See Margin Call.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is 1 pip in dollars?
It depends on the pair and your lot size. On EUR/USD, 0.01 lot makes one pip about $0.10. A bigger lot multiplies that number.
Are pips the same on all pairs?
No. Yen pairs count the second decimal instead of the fourth. Gold moves in much larger steps. Stick to one pair while you learn.
How many pips should I target daily?
No fixed number exists. Pips do not pay — dollar risk does. Risk 1% per trade and skip most days.
Why did 10 pips cost more than I expected?
Your lot size was bigger than planned, or spread added to the loss. Check lot size and spread before every order.
