Spread and Swap: Two Hidden Costs

Risk warning: Costs eat small accounts quietly. This is education, not financial advice.

Spread is the small fee you pay when you open a trade. Swap is the nightly fee you pay when you hold past about 10pm WAT.

Both come out of your balance whether you win or lose.

Spread is entry fee

Every forex price has two numbers. The lower one is the sell price. The higher one is the buy price.

The gap between them is the spread. Your broker keeps it as the cost of the trade.

Example: EUR/USD shows sell 1.0852 and buy 1.0854. The gap is 2 pips (tiny price steps). You start every trade 2 pips negative.

A tight spread means a cheap entry. EUR/USD in busy hours is usually tight. Exotic pairs and gold cost more to enter.

You already saw spread in MT5 Quotes. See How to Install MT5 and Pips and Lots.

The gap between the sell price and the buy price is the spread. You pay it on every order, so each trade starts slightly negative.

Swap charges overnight

A swap (rollover) is rent for holding overnight. If your trade stays open past the nightly cutoff, your broker charges a small fee.

The cutoff lands around 10pm WAT each day. Anything still open at that minute gets the fee.

Buy and sell swaps differ per pair. Most retail holds pay a small charge. A few rate-gap pairs pay a tiny credit instead.

One mid-week night counts triple, usually Wednesday. That single night covers the weekend. See Trading Sessions: When Beginners Should Trade.

Swap applies when you hold a position past the nightly rollover around 10pm WAT. One mid-week night counts triple, so holding over days costs more.

Nights multiply small fees

One night of swap looks tiny. Ten nights in a row do not.

Example: you hold 0.01 lot with a $10 Cent account. Spread costs about $0.20 once. Swap takes a small bite each night.

After a week, the nightly bites can pass the entry fee. Your winning exit must beat spread plus all nights.

This is why beginners close within days. Long holds suit bigger accounts, not learners. See The 1% Rule and Position Sizing.

News spreadMinutes around big newsSpread can double or triple
Your real cost is spread plus swap times nights held. A cheap-looking trade turns costly when you hold it for many days.

News widens the spread

Big news widens spread for minutes. US data around 1:30pm WAT is a classic moment.

Your stop sits closer to price when spread jumps. A normal wiggle can knock you out.

Skip the first 15 minutes after big news. The fee drops back when calm returns. See What Makes the Market Move and When Not to Trade.

Check costs before trading

Run this check before every order. It takes one minute.

  1. Read spread — open Quotes and note the spread number.
  2. Ask nights — decide how many nights you may hold.
  3. Add swap — check the swap rate in MT5 specs times nights.
  4. Skip news — check the calendar for news in the next hour.

If total cost eats half your target, skip the trade. See Your First Trade and Best Time to Trade.

Bottom line: Every trade pays spread at entry and swap for each night held. Count both before you click, or hidden fees eat your plan.
