Inside Bar: The Quiet Before Moves
Risk warning: Breakout patterns fail often and every example here is education, not financial advice or a trading signal.
An inside bar is a small candle resting fully inside a big mother candle. When price closes beyond the mother edge with the H1 trend, that quiet pause can confirm your entry.
Small inside, big outside, close decides. A poke beyond the edge without a close is just noise.
Demo example — not a signal.
Small inside big
Think of a child standing inside a parent's footprints in wet sand. Every step fits within the bigger print. That is an inside bar.
- Mother. The big candle that sets the range: its high is the ceiling, its low is the floor.
- Inside bar. The small candle after it. Its high stays below the mother high. Its low stays above the mother low.
One inside bar is a pause. Two or three in a row are a squeeze, a smaller cousin of the flag. Read Candlesticks: What Each Candle Tells You.
Mother draws the lines
The mother edges are your trigger lines. Draw them and wait.
- Ceiling. A line across the mother high. A close above it starts a long plan.
- Floor. A line across the mother low. A close below it starts a short plan.
- Size. The mother should stand clearly taller than nearby candles. A barely-bigger mother is just chop.
This mirrors the box you already know. Read Range Break and Marking Important Areas.
Break with the trend
The H1 trend picks which edge you may trade. The inside bar never votes alone.
- Uptrend. Higher highs and higher lows on H1. Only breaks above the mother high count.
- Downtrend. Lower highs and lower lows on H1. Only breaks below the mother low count.
- Sideways. Skip, unless the mother sits exactly at a box edge you trust.
The setup shines inside trends as a breather before the next push. Against the trend it is a coin flip. Read Trends: Trading With the River, Not Against It.
Enter after close
Never enter on the inside bar itself. It points nowhere. Wait for the break, then use steps:
- Confirm trend — H1 direction is clear and the mother is obvious.
- Mark both edges — mother high and mother low lines on M15.
- Wait for close — a candle body closes beyond the trend-side edge.
- Check the hour — calm overlap hours, around 1pm–5pm WAT, no news near.
- Write the plan — entry, stop, target, and invalidation before you click.
A wick poking past the edge proves nothing. The closed body is the proof. Read Reading Candle Proof.
Stop below mother
The opposite mother edge is your invalidation line. Price returning there means the pause resolved against you.
- Stop. Place it a few pips beyond the opposite mother edge, past the wick noise.
- Rule. A full-bodied close back inside the mother range kills the idea. Stand aside.
- No rescue. Never widen the stop because price touched it.
Mother ranges are small, so stops stay tight and targets stay honest. On a $10 Cent demo, risk stays near $0.10. Read Stop Loss: Your Automatic Brake Pedal.
Target the next area
Inside breaks often run fast, then stall at the first old level. Aim short of it.
- Measure. From entry to the nearest old resistance, support, or swing point.
- Demand 1:1. Skip the trade if the target is closer than your stop distance.
- Two-step option. Some traders bank half at one mother-height and hold the rest to the area.
A breakout entry without a measured target is a guess with a stop. Read Risk-Reward Ratio and Plan Entry and Exit.
Inside means wait
Two outcomes confuse beginners at the mother edge.
- Close beyond. The body breaks the edge and stays out. The pause resolved with the trend.
- Wick only. Price pokes out and snaps back inside. The market is still deciding.
Chop prints inside bars all day and breaks both edges by dinner. News prints a giant mother and shreds both stops. Same answer for both: wait or skip. Read Real or False Break and When Not to Trade.

Common mistakes
Trading every inside bar
Entering each small candle you spot. Filters first: trend, area, hour, news.
Entering the inside bar
Clicking before any break exists. The inside bar is the waiting room, not the door.
Buying the wick poke
Chasing a spike past the edge. Wait for the body to close outside.
Using tiny mothers
Trading a mother barely bigger than its neighbours. Demand an obvious size gap.
Doubling after failures
Retrying the opposite edge right after a failed break. One failed break ends the plan.
Your practice task
Use replay mode or a demo chart. Do not fund an account for this exercise.
- Open EUR/USD on H1 and label the trend: up, down, or wait.
- Drop to M15 and circle every mother that stands clearly taller.
- Mark both edges and advance candles one by one.
- Label each exit — close beyond with trend, wick only, or wrong trend.
- Log 20 mothers with screenshots, stop line, and reward-to-risk math.
- Score rule-following — did you skip every wick-only poke?

An inside bar trade is the same five-point process: risk, direction, area, proof, exit. The mother is just a one-candle area.

Bottom line: Trade only a close beyond the mother edge with the H1 trend. Risk near 1%, stop beyond the opposite edge, and stand aside when price closes back inside.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an inside bar in forex?
An inside bar is a small candle whose full range sits within the prior big candle, called the mother. Its high stays below the mother high and its low stays above the mother low. It shows the market pausing.
How do I trade an inside bar breakout?
Wait for a candle to close beyond the mother high or mother low, in the H1 trend direction. Enter after that close with the stop beyond the opposite mother edge. The close decides, never the poke.
Where do I place my stop loss on an inside bar trade?
Place the stop a few pips beyond the opposite mother edge. For a long break that means below the mother low. If price closes back inside the mother range, the idea is wrong and you stand aside.
Why do inside bars fail so often?
Small ranges break both ways in chop, and beginners trade every one they see. Filters fix most failures: H1 trend, a marked area nearby, calm hours, and no big news coming.
